Samurai

Sumer grass – September 2023

Scale 28 mm

In a private collection

With this figure I wanted to emulate the style of a japaneese litography. It was a challenging experiment to integrate the 2D feeling of the illustrative style with the 3D views.

The tree and the bridge gave me the room to play with perspective and the bent background explained the idea furthemore.

The quote and the frame

After setting up the main idea I felt that I needed to enhance the lithographic style by adding some japanese calligraphy to the background. I used the excuse to add Matsuo Basho’s haiku. It translates as “Summer Grass/ all that remains/ of a Samurai’s dreams”. To me, the message of the haiku was explained with the contrast between the calm feeling of the scene and the dynamic pose of the figure.

One finished I decided to add some black paper to the background to enhance the vignette effect as well as giving it the old paper texture that I needed to finish the look.
