This figure represents Izanami-no-Mikoto, the creation goddess and deity of the underworld in the Shinto mythology. I painted this figure with the World Model Expo 2022 in mind. It was a figure where I wanted to challenge myself by facing a complex piece, which involves one 75mm figure, surrounded by twelve 54mm figures and the corresponding scenography.

The Flowers

Not long before I painted this figure I lost a very important person in my life. She was one of the main influences in my curiosity for art and with her I probably held my first brush. I vividly remember summer afternoons where she taught me how to mix and use paint, how to copy drawings from other painters and how to work with perspective.

She used to paint flowers and nature-related topics, among others. In the lower part of the dress I tried to replicate her the flowers I see every day in her painting, hanged next to me in my studio.

The Souls

The process of painting the souls surrounding Izanami was by far the most complex I have confronted so far. I wanted to make each figure slightly different than the rest but, at the same time, make them work as a whole. I wanted to use white clothes, inspired by the first chapter of the tv show Kingdom, which also focuses on the topic of death.

I started painting them separately, trying to achieve subtle skin tone variations and, when I had them all sketched, I focussed on merging them together, giving the piece its final look.
